Mike Page’s name has become synonymous with
high-quality aerial photographs in East Anglia.
His popular books have sold in their thousands
while his photographs also appear regularly in
newspapers, magazines and on TV. Norfolk from the Air might be said to be ‘the best of the best’,
covering as it does his home county and including
hand-picked photographs from recent flights. Within these pages there are examples of every
type of landscape and a wide variety of interesting
features, from the oldest castles to modern
factories, from Broadland waters to Fenland
drainage, from magnificent churches to stately
homes, from bustling towns to sleepy villages,
from ancient tracks to busy road
interchanges, and from windmills to wind turbines.
Mike’s experience in capturing the very
best images, combined with his intimate knowledge
of Norfolk, is perfectly matched to the text
provided by PaulineYoung who has collaborated
with Mike on many previous books.

For many years it has been Mike Page’s ambition to
produce a book featuring his photographs of Norfolk’s
railways from the air, and expert authors Graham
Kenworthy and Richard Adderson were delighted to
have the opportunity of working with Mike and his
fine pictures to help him achieve this aim. Their
text provides additional and fascinating information
regarding the historic significance of the locations
shown in the images. All the photographs were taken
by Mike Page between 2001 and 2009 and range
from pictures of today’s 100 mph electric trains and
preserved steam locomotives in action, to fading
traces of railways abandoned in the 1950s. The
selection is wide enough to satisfy the most critical of
readers and where necessary the book strays briefly
over the border into adjacent counties in order to
complete the story.
This unique book is aimed at both the rail enthusiast and for anyone with an interest in the Norfolk landscape. The aerial images alone are intriguing and remarkably compelling.

The superb aerial photographs of Mike Page have
generated a veritable library of books devoted to
Norfolk and Suffolk, each new volume being eagerly
snapped up by his increasing numbers of avid followers.
Here, following on the success of Norfolk Coast from the
Air comes a completely new set of images covering the
coast from Hopton on the Suffolk border around the
coast to The Wash.
In Norfolk Coast from the Air 2 attention is paid to the
smaller villages and to the effects of erosion that
change this coastline from year to year. The importance
of aerial photography in highlighting the perils
faced as a result of the encroaching sea is vividly
displayed in these fascinating images, with comparisons
made between those areas which have sea defenses
and those which do not. Also included are coastal
improvements such as the new outer harbour at Great
Yarmouth, the reefs at Sea Palling, and the defenses at
Horsey.
The detail in these photographs also provide a fascinating overview of this history of the coast from the Roman settlement at Caister through to the Second World War radar installations at Trimingham. Along with the changes that have taken place, we are also reminded of things that have remained much the same. The importance of the holiday industry to this part of Norfolk is exemplified through the holiday parks, the magnificent beaches and the areas devoted to the protection of wildlife. These days such things provides the means for thousands to enjoy leisure pursuits including water sports of all kinds, bird watching, or simply walking the coastal footpaths.

As Roy Snelling says in his foreword 'This is a superb collection of superb aerial photographs. I am sure it will be treasured by all of us who live here, and all who ever visited. Broadland is such a beautiful place and yet many of us who have lived in East Anglia all our lives will not have seen some of the sites shown here as they are inaccessible on foot or by boat. I am sure this book will find its way on to the bookshelves of lovers of Broadland all over the world.'

Mike’s intimate knowledge of the area and his interest in flying and photography make him particularly well qualified to create this fine collection of aerial pictures of Suffolk’s coastline. Geography has bequeathed the county with an isolation that has shaped its great character. And its scenery is delightful as you’ll see. The seaside towns, major and minor ports, fishing villages, woodlands, nature reserves and seaside resorts show off their character so well. Long gone are the brigands and pirates who dominated this coastline in yesteryear. Its constant domination continues to be the North Sea which shapes the coastline and keeps it in a state of change. Readers will enjoy these outstanding bird’s eye views of Suffolk’s fine coastline and Pauline Young’s excellent accompanying text notes.
